More and more otherwise astute businesses, organizations, and professionals are making poor choices in their website design and construction. Too often, they choose a friend who is “good with computers” to be the webmaster (and usually willing to do it for next to nothing) or they choose a cheap, over-the-counter software package just to save money.
Either way, it can be a big mistake because the end result is a glut of lackluster and less-than-optimal websites that never achieve what they might have achieved if they were designed right in the first place. What’s the old saying – you get what you pay for? Or, in some cases, don’t pay for?
The condition and appearance of your website are as critical to the perception and profitability of your business as your physical condition and appearance are to your personal health and self-esteem. Your website is a direct reflection on you and your business, and if it is plain, cheap-looking, looks like something “off the shelf”, or is difficult to maneuver around, your customers – and potential customers – will be able to tell the difference immediately. They just won’t tell you. Worse, they will likely look somewhere else to do their business, and you will never know why.
Of course, appearances preclude technical problems which can be exasperating to both you and those trying to access your website. While many of the amateur computer “experts” might eventually fix the problem, a real pro will usually prevent it from happening in the first place and maintain the overall fitness of your website.
